The Journey led to my Passion

Let’s start off by saying – I have moved a lot, a whopping 16 times.  Some locally here around the city of Edmonton, some following my husband around North America during his successful professional hockey career, and some interesting moves internationally. The amount of the world I have seen is staggering, The dollar value of real estate we have bought and sold is of abundance, and the amount of experience I have with all of the different types of architecture, design, buying and selling I have amassed through all of those moves can be information overload for some – but for me its become my passion.
I grew up amidst constant renovations, my father would always have something around the house that was in the process of being upgraded, from kitchens and bathrooms to complete exteriors and new garages. Throughout, I always had my hands in there, brainstorming design concepts and picking out finishes. By the age of twelve I had control of the interior design of our home, it was evident I knack for it.  I loved the process of creating themes, working around our current layout and bringing it to another level.
When I first moved in with my now Husband, our home was definitely less than stellar. Typical 70’s home on the north end of Edmonton. Shag carpets, original tile, dated bathrooms, original plumbing and light fixtures. My husband didn’t seem to mind – but I wasn’t living with it, so much so, there was nights where we were building stack stone planters at 11pm! Amidst the hundreds of mosquito bites, my hands quite literally rubbed raw from the stone and the aches and pain the next day, the finished product was exceptional creating a level of curb appeal that really made our home stand out. I made terrific decisions on what needed the attention to give our home the best value. On my very limited budget at the time I was able to tackle all the eye sores which in return gave us exceptional value when we sold.

Our first international move came when Johnny was traded to the Boston Bruins.  It was an exhilarating city full of historic architecture. The federalist, colonial, Romanesque, Greek revival, international, and brutalist styled buildings is unlike I had ever seen back home, and I was obsessed. Boston also came with a booming real estate market, you bought high and sold high. It was a bustling luxury market. The amount of small designer niche styled stores on every street corner was astounding, the options you had for furniture, cabinets, lighting and art was rivaled by another store within shouting distance. Our first home purchase in Boston was a the penthouse in a building called “Commercial Wharf”. We purchased it through an Agent named Carmela Laurella. (Carmela is a fantastic realtor and someone I really look up to in this industry,) It was water front overlooking Christopher Columbus park and the Boston Yacht Haven. As with most homes in Boston, it was a beautiful mix of old and new. They really have an understanding on how to bring new life to all of the old elements without sacrificing the original architectural charm that makes Boston – Boston! Our next home in Boston was a stunning brownstone on the south side, the complete opposite of what we had just come from.  Very similar in square footage, however the penthouse was a large wide open layout, and our brownstone was a tall and narrow. It was a serious learning curve on how to use the space. It was a serious challenge

When Johnny was traded to the New York Islanders we yet again, started the process of finding a home, it wasn’t as easy as it had been in years prior.  We had a growing family and our needs had changed from the fast paced hustle and bustle of a downtown life style to a more laid back, family orientated lifestyle. We set our eyes on Garden City, a beautiful community on long island. Real estate in Garden City is a volatile environment. Things move so quickly and unpredictably, we found a “home”, if that’s what you want to call it (it was almost uninhabitable), with the plan to knock it down and build a modern Victorian home, reflecting well with the historic architecture that Garden City is known for. New York is the epicenter of design, there is no arguing that. The options and styles are endless and so far ahead of its time, it was the perfect place for me and my brain that just doesn’t stop with design ideas and concepts. Our modern Victorian turned out incredible, the detail was so in depth that when it came time to have our real-wood wall panels and moldings carved, we were at the mill choosing our knives, there was not one part of that home that you’d seen else where. It was completely custom, I worked out every detail to the floor plan creating this breath taking house that still receives an enormous amount of compliments today. When we sold that home, it didn’t even make it to market. It was sold before we had really considered moving back to Edmonton – it was so desirable.  After that project I began to work with other players on designing and managing renovations and construction. From strictly interior designs to full blown overhauls of homes. And after some of these players were traded they would still reach out to me for their new homes in their prospective cities at which point it clicked –  maybe I should explore this avenue?
Throughout all of this craziness we call life, we still spent almost every summer back here in Edmonton with our families, we have had a lake house for many years, a few hours away from the city that we are constantly upgrading and renovating and is a property we love so dearly.  We also had a rental set up in one of our first homes in Cloverdale, which would house a lot of the new pick ups for the Edmonton Oilers until they got an idea of what they were looking for in our vibrant city.  We have a handful of real estate investment properties around the city from starter homes to luxury condos that we have added to our portfolio over the last few years.  My knowledge of real estate has done us very well over the years in terms of investment. Before becoming a real estate agent, I was previewing real estate for friends and colleagues who were moving to and around Edmonton. I would seek out the perfect home for them to fit their lifestyle and budget – from there I would arrange showings with my agent, a well respected and successful realtor®. When my agent found out we were planning on moving back to Edmonton, she was very adamant that I would excel in the industry as a Realtor® with my knowledge and experience. She really encouraged me to get my license and propel me into a position where we now work side by side!
